From Valvettithurai to a recognised Yamaha dealership
Yamaha Plaza was more than a motorcycle business. It represented a period of ambition, entrepreneurship, and determination in Valvettithurai, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
Founded and operated by Mahendran Kumar, Yamaha Plaza was built around the Yamaha motorcycle and outboard motor business. The business developed a presence through its showrooms and service operations, bringing vehicles, marine engines, customer service, and the Yamaha name to the local community.
The work involved more than selling motorcycles. It meant building customer relationships, supporting riders, and developing a business in a challenging market.
Beyond the roads, Yamaha Plaza played a crucial role in the region's fishing industry. Following the devastating 2004 tsunami, the demand for outboard motors surged. The dealership engaged closely with local communities, including the N.P. Fishermens Co-operative Society Union, navigating significant market challenges and complex supply chain distributions during the region's recovery.
Yamaha Plaza's history also included a connection with Associated Motorways Limited (AMW), the Sri Lankan company associated with the Yamaha brand. Through this relationship, the proprietor participated in the Yamaha dealer network and its industry events.
